Beautiful as Castelo de Vide is, MARVÃO surpasses it. The panoramas
from its remote eyrie site are unrivalled and the atmosphere even
quieter than a population of less than a thousand would suggest. No more
a handful of houses - each as scrupulously whitewashed as the rest -
lies outside the seventeenth-century walls. The thirteenth-century
castle stands at the far end of the village, its walls blending into the
sharp slopes of the serra. It's dauntingly impenetrable and was indeed
captured only once, in 1833, when the attackers entered through a secret
gate. The best time to visit is during the annual chestnut festival or
Festa da Castanha held annually in the middle of November.
The turismo , on Rua Dr. Antönio Matos Magalhães (daily 9.30am-12.30pm &
2-5.30pm; tel 245 993 104) can help out with accommodation or try the
Pensão Dom Dinis (tel 245 993 235: £15-20/$24-32/¬27-36) further along
the same road. For meals , the Restaurante Varanda do Alentejo in Praça
do Pelourinho is good and you can also eat and drink at the bars just
off the square.
